BMW sDrive vs. xDrive: What's the Difference?

BMW sDrive

BMW sDrive transmits power to two of your four wheels, and the majority of BMW sDrive models have been engineered with rear-wheel drive. However, certain sDrive models, including the 1 Series and the BMW X2, offer front-wheel drive instead. 

Unlike the single-axle drivetrains offered by many other manufacturers, BMW sDrive enhances your daily drives with torque vectoring. As a result, even the larger models in the current BMW lineup are impressively agile on Chino Hills and Corona roads.

BMW xDrive

BMW xDrive, which may also be referred to as BMW AWD, is a symmetric all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring capability. The drivetrain uses an electronically-actuated clutch pack differential to ensure that an ideal balance of torque reaches the front and rear wheels. The effects are impossible to ignore:

• Working in concert with Dynamic Stability Control, BMW xDrive AWD monitors road conditions and adapts accordingly.
• If slippery surfaces are detected, or if a loss of traction occurs, the system automatically adjusts itself, delivering torque to wherever it can most effectively propel you forward.

Which Models are Available with BMW xDrive and BMW sDrive?

• Standard sDrive: BMW sDrive comes standard on a wide variety of X Series Sport Activity Vehicles® and Sport Activity Coupes®, including the X1, X2, X3, X5, and the X6. It’s also standard on the 7 Series sedan and the Z4 roadster.
• Available xDrive: xDrive is offered as an upgrade on all of the models identified above. It’s also an optional upgrade for the 2 Series, the 3 Series, the 4 Series, the 5 Series, and the 8 Series. 
• Standard xDrive: Some models don’t offer sDrive, but instead come standard with BMW xDrive AWD. These include the X4, the X7, and the i8. xDrive is also standard on the M5, the M8, and the M Series variants of the X3, X4, X5, and X6.
